GEA BROWN
After graduating in History of Contemporary Art Gea Brown starts working at Centro di Cultura Contemporanea Strozzina in Florence until 2011, where she begins to take an interest in
music, and approaches djing by intertwining sounds of the past and present to create collages of sounds that acquire compositional autonomy.
In 2012 she moves to Milan where her research deepens by the participation in workshops and the contact with Spazio O', a center for musical experimentation.
With the moniker Gea Brown she creates live sets and environmental soundtracks, collaborating with designers and artists working with dance, theater, performance and video art.
The experimentation she has carried out over the last year is characterized by the use of materials of a vocal nature: spoken words, sound poetry, concrete poetry, conversation pieces,
comedy.
The new projects go towards a performative approach (sometimes getting the audience involved): each live set tests in a different way the possibility of a balance between the narrative-
semantic function of the vocal element of a spoken language and its intrinsic sound dimension, without one dominating the other.
She currently lives in Prato, where she works as a sound artist and curator for visual art and sound projects, at SC17 (http://www.sc17.it/) and Lottozero (http://www.lottozero.org/).
Her live set and sound performances have been shown in Contemporary Art Centers and Cultural Institutions (Triennale di Milano, Palazzo Strozzi di Firenze, Istituto Svizzero di Roma, Villa
Romana, Museo Marino Marini), Festival (S/V/N, Terraforma, Hand Signed, Transart, Sonic Somatic, NODE), radio and web magazines (Radio Papesse, mixtura.org, Noisey/VICE, Gonzo
(circus), FSK, Datscha Radio, Introspettiva).
In 2016 she was artist in resident at Hotel Pupik (Scheifling, Austria).
Con un background come storica dell'arte, Gea Brown si accosta al djing ricercando differenti filoni musicali, in un intreccio continuo tra storia e presente.
Nei suoi set musica elettronica degli esordi e minimalismo americano entrano in dialogo con le ricerche contemporanee in campo elettronico e elettroacustico. Un approccio trasversale che
attinge anche a musica etnica, noise e tribalismi, con una predilezione per l'elemento vocale proveniente da spoken word e sound poetry.
La sua ultima ricerca è tesa a sperimentare, all'interno del format del mixtape, la possibilità di un equilibrio in divenire tra l'aspetto narrativo e semantico del linguaggio parlato e la sua
dimensione intrinsecamente sonora, senza che l'uno prevalga sull'altro.
Dal 2010 è parte del duo Alpin Folks, con cui porta avanti un progetto audiovisivo segnato dall'unione di musica drone e musica techno.
Ha curato sonorizzazioni per eventi legati al design e alle arti visive e performative, collaborando con diverse realtà che operano nel contemporaneo, quali IUAV, Spazio O', Basemental,
Sincronie, TAI - Tuscan Art Industry, NUL.
I suoi dj set sono stati presentati in spazi culturali e centri d'arte contemporanea (Triennale di Milano, Palazzo Strozzi, Istituto Svizzero di Roma, Museo Marino Marini, Villa Romana)
rassegne e festival di musica sperimentale (International Feel, S/V/N, Terraforma) e web radio (Radio Papesse, Datscha Radio, FSK, Mixtura.org).
